The Japanese with Allies in WWI????

I know that I was ignorant from that information since my knowledge leans more to WWII not WWI. But when I learned that the Japanese was actually with the Allies during WWII helping us against the Axis I was very surprised and a little shocked. I always viewed the Japanese as being against the Allies not working with them. I also found it a little ironic because we bascially handed over China over to Japan to help start their imperialistic march.

  1. I thought that the Japanese were Central Powers too! And apparently they kind of were, they had an unofficial alliance with Germany that they managed to find their way out of, and a secret alliance with France. So... there ya go. :) Now you don't have to feel ignorant by yourself.

  2. Alex,
The Japanese are selfish. Their decision to side with the allies in WWI was based purely on the fact that they stood to gain land from it. The need to be imperialistic also pushed the Japanese to join the Axis in WWII. As for us basically handing China to Japan..Oops?

  3. I am so with you on the fact that I don't understand why we were jsut like oh here ya go Japan take China. I mean I kind of think it might have been the idea that we owed Japan something for their support but I definitly don't agree that it was the rigth thing to do. And why didn't China really get a say I mean I understand that they've been the shere of influence for so long, but really we don't feel like dealing China so we dump them off to Japan!

  4. Regarding Ben's comment, were the Japanese selfish? Or is it true that all nations (past and present) act in their own interests? In this context, isn't it unfair to label anyone "selfish"?

  5. To Ben,
On your comment about us basically handing China to Japan- was it an "oops?" Would Japan have joined us had we not told them that China would be theirs? And if that had not happened, would they have not joined the side of the Central powers in World War I? And what would have happened if Germany had another front, rather than merely being surrounded? Japan, although it was not a major influencing factor on World War I for the Allies, could have become a huge strategic advantage for Germany if they had had another front. What would have even happened had the Central Powers won World War I? Certainly, I don't believe it would be nearly as bad as if Nazi Germany had won World War II. I don't want to get too in depth with this topic though- it'd be an essay written here, not a comment.
